So, I wanted a heavy duty FLAT workbench to build things on. I didn’t want to take the time to build a torsion-box workbench, I have too many other things to get done before I get to that, but I did need a stable platform to work from in the meantime that wouldn’t break the bank or take alot of time to put together. I’ve approximated this bench to be between 200-300 lbs total. Uses heavy duty shelving brackets, a solid core door, and 2 sheets of 3/4″ particle board for the shelves. It’s approx 37″ tall, 32″ wide by 80″ long.
So off to the Home Center I went, and bought what you see listed above… plus 2 more rails…ended up that having the rails to sit the top on worked out the best for keeping things stable and flat.
The cat decided she needed to help me with this project…. End view of the first assembly… have also installed the 3 “precut” shelving panels, ended up using these UNDER the top. Staining the table. This was pretty painless and easy of course. This is after 3 coats of poly for the topcoat on the bench. Some might worry this is “too slick” to be useful, but I didn’t sand between coats, so it’s pretty “sticky” when using bench dogs. Using the bench for the first time, to cut shelving for the bench ! Notice the EXTRA rails now ! Under the top. Picture of how the bench dog cookies were used to hold the material in order to saw it. Also notice the bolts now in most of the shelving, to keep things from coming undone The bench loaded up…. works GREAT. Approx total cost after extra rails and particle board for shelves, $250..ish.
